The Last Hour, an original alternative modern rock band that originally formed in North Carolina, has emerged as a favorite on the local music scene. Earlier in the year, Travis Comer (founder, vocals, and guitar) recruited local musicians Jeffrey Smith (guitar) and Brett Cardiff (bass), and reunited with former band mate Paul Salas (drums) to resurrect The Last Hour in the Houston area. Their first performance together was in March, 2012 at the “Best of Houston Showcase” at the SXSW Festival in Austin.

“We literally had one six-hour band practice before the show,” said Smith. “But it didn’t seem that long… We all just clicked.” The Last Hours’ debut went very well and it was sign of positive things to come…

“Getting the right group of musicians together isn’t easy sometimes,” says Comer. “You have to find like-minded individuals with talent and ambition to make it work.”

After meeting Smith and Cardiff through mutual friends, Comer knew they would compliment his vision for the group. Salas moving from North Carolina to Texas was also meant to be. “I quit my job, cashed in my 401k, and haven’t looked back,” says Salas, who also goes by the nickname “Latin Lover.” As most bands struggle to find the time to practice, work, and maintain their sanity, The Last Hour’s members are committed to achieving it all. They practice up to 4x a week to make the current songs tight as well as create new music, and blow off steam by hanging out with the fifth member of the band… Jack Daniels.

“There is a brotherly vibe,” says Cardiff. “And we know the distinction between working hard and playing hard. There is a time for both.”

The Last Hour’s first CD, A Month of Sundays, was recorded with different backing musicians from North Carolina. Comer originally formed the band in 2005 and released this CD in November, 2008. The band dissolved in 2010 when Comer moved to Texas.

“When I arrived I started giving out copies of my EP to promote myself. People took interest so I decided to bring back The Last Hour… During 2011, I recorded two demos for two new songs. A special thanks goes to George Thomas III and Charlie Carlisle for helping me resurrect The Last Hour before Paul Salas re-joined this year,” says Comer.

The Last Hour has a unique dynamic to their sound. Anyone who is looking for some new music for their CD player would benefit from giving this band a good listen.

Songs from the first CD are huge medium paced rock anthems with hooks, grooves and swagger to spare. The live show is dramatic with tempo changes courtesy of the engine supplied by Cardiff’s bass and Salas’ drum beats, soaring chorus lines sung by Comer and heavy guitar riffs by Smith blow through the sound boundaries and tear it apart with a really convincing display of high-powered alternative rock.

The band makes a good impact. The result of their efforts is a fresh, rock sound that harbors between classic grunge and modern alternative rock. This coupled with the well arranged vocals gives this “new” band a particular, varying sound. The Last Hour is currently gearing up to release a new EP out at the end of 2012 or beginning of 2013.

Already, 94.5 The Buzz has their original song “Blinded By Her Eyes” on its Sunday night rotation and “Vampire” is being played on College Station’s 103.9 FM.

The Last Hour has shared the stage with national recording artists Candlebox, Days of the New, and Rehab and most recently Trapt. They are currently gearing up for an August show with Parabelle on August 18 and September 2 with The Hunger. Both shows are at Scout Bar.
